Gardening

I think the warm is finally here to stay! We've been busy expanding our garden (I really wanted some add some raspberries into the mix and they needed their own box. Soooo I convinced Cam to build me another box, and while he was at it 2 more :) I'm actually pretty proud of myself because I got to use the power tools and help put them together. Haha.

With our first box we got untreated reg wood (I wasn't into the idea of chemically treated wood leaking chemicals in the soil then being soaked up by the plants and into our food).  After 3 years it's starting to rot out pretty good. So this time we were smarter and opted for cedar. But we found a really cheap source for it so I think we'll replace the bigger box too next year. I like to garden so I'm writing too much...but anyway, here's pictures.

After!

Yummy strawberries are coming! If you can see in the pic we have a 16 x 4 space dedicated to strawberries because we love fruit! I can hardly wait!

Here's what we're growing this year.

Strawberries
Raspberries
Snow Peas
Snap Peas
Broccoli
Carrots
Tomatoes
Peppers
Basil
Parsley
Bush beans
Zucchini
Yellow Squash

Hooray! Hope the bugs don't eat it all before we do!

  1. So did you do the lasagna layering of the compost and all, or what style do you do? It all looks so good, I hope you get to eat it before the bugs too. With your fence, do you have problems with animals?

  2. I just got the compost on free week. I'm going to do something similar and once all my seeds are up, mulch it with some hay and leaves we have. No problems with animals yet so far except last year after my strawberries were done they got a little eaten by something- A deer I believe. At least the fence keeps rabbits and armadillos out.

  3. That's awesome Becky! Whoa, that's a lot of strawberries! It puts our one little strawberry plant to shame. I hope the garden goes well, and let the war begin on those bugs!

  4. YOU are my gardening idol. I seriously need to call you some time and get some tips. We got some compost the free week also but it wasn't enough:( Two questions... What all do you put in there with it, and when do you plant? Did you already plant everything? I want to try and get our little bit in by this weekend. Great job you guys, you're amazing. I can't wait to see your deliciousness!

  5. Haylie, with the compost for the new boxes I just used some peat moss we had and took some sand from Cruz's sand box and threw it in there. Just one bucket a box and it was plenty. And yep, I've planted everything now. Technically I your suppose to plant warm veggies around the 1st of May just to be safe, but I wanted to get a jump on things before the bugs came :) Haha I'm no expert but you can call me if you have questions :)

  6. i had no desire to plant strawberries until I saw your beautifully flowering fruit! Yum. I'm on it. Are yours back from last year, or did you buy starters somewhere, here? I haven't found starters for less than $3 a pop. Any suggestions?

  7. Meg- I know you said you already bought some plants but in case you still are curious I got mine bare root in a pack of 24 for $7 and put them in the ground dormant in Feb of 2010.
